Controller

Position Description: The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), a Seattle-based nonprofit, is seeking a Controller to plan, direct, and execute the financial activities of the Organization at the highest level of management. The Controller is responsible for financial reporting and analysis, internal controls, financial compliance, audit and tax functions, and coordinates the daily operations of all accounting functions. This position reports to the President as a full-time, salaried, exempt employee.
Responsibilities
include, but are not limited to:
- Managing all general accounting functions for NBR
- Supervising the NBR accountant
- Overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
- Working with Project Directors, Group Vice Presidents, and the Director, Research and Operations to plan and monitor project budgets
- Providing high-level financial analysis to the President and executive team
- Billing, tracking, and collecting on contracts and grants
- Preparing financial statements for all sponsors
- Managing banking and investment activity
- Preparing for and participating in NBR’s annual audit
- Reporting to NBR’s Board of Directors at its semi-annual meetings, and to its Audit Committee as necessary
- Performing monthly and quarterly reconciliation of accounts
- Filing quarterly and yearly tax returns
- Other duties as necessary
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a Certified Public Accountant with advanced expertise in nonprofit accounting and compliance (including A-133 Federal compliance). A minimum of 5 years nonprofit accounting experience and a working knowledge of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are required. The ideal candidate will also possess excellent listening, verbal, and written communications skills, and will be dependable, flexible, and resourceful.
